Why age matters: IEEE Std 493-2007 reports a base failure rate of 0.41% per year for liquid-filled transformers. However, failure rates are age-dependent: climbing to approximately 1.0% at age 40, 2.5% at age 50, and over 5.0% at age 60. This tool uses a piecewise interpolation of these published values to estimate your transformer’s annual failure probability.

How this assessment works

Sourced data

Failure rates are derived from IEEE Std 493-2007 and CIGRE survey data covering hundreds of thousands of transformers. All figures are cited with sources.

Transparent formula

Every calculation is shown step by step. No black boxes. You can verify every number against the published research yourself.
